Tuesday Matinee
A Summer Place is one of those late 50's melodramas that just can't be recreated today. Released in 1959, the film takes place at a Summer resort on Pine Island where two couples in unhappy marriages meet, with two of them falling in love. All the while, their teenage children are falling hard too. Starring Dorothy McGuire, Sandra Dee, Richard Egan, and Arthur Kennedy, the film is directed by Delmer Daves. Catch this film on TCM June 8th at 5:45 p.m. EST.
Bette Davis seems slightly miscast in June Bride (also starring Robert Montgomery), but I love her in this little romantic comedy! She stars as women's magazine editor Linda Gilman who is busy covering a June Bride for her magazine. Her ex flame is assigned to be a feature writer for her magazine after his foreign correspondent office is closed. They each have their own ideas about their future together. And the comedy ensues. If you're a fan of The Man Who Came to Dinner, you will enjoy this little comedy. June Bride will be on TCM June 16th at 4:15 p.m. EST.
There is something about classic Sci-Fi that feels so summery to me. That's why I had to include the classic Them! in my June TCM picks. Nuclear tests in New Mexico cause ants to mutate into giant monsters who terrorize locals, and eventually migrate into Los Angeles. This is a really well done piece of science fiction that was released in B&W in 1954 by director Gordon Douglas. See this on TCM June 18th at 12:00 p.m. EST.
