Goddess Reclaimed is the newest edition to the Turner Classic Movies Library and Running Press. Written by Donald Bogle, he has authored many books on Black cinema history, including the Turner Classic Movies book, Hollywood Black. If you’re looking to learn about Lena Horne, view gorgeous photographs (some never before seen), or learn about Black history in cinema, this book will be one you wont want to miss.
In Goddess Reclaimed, Bogle goes back to the beginning of her life in Brooklyn, New York. He details her time at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, her time in Hollywood, and everything in between. Lena’s life and career were very layered with many ups and downs. Bogle handles the details with delicate care, and delves deep into all aspects of her life. On top of each chapter being full of information that is both fresh and interesting, almost every single page of this 264 page coffee table size book has gorgeous photographs of Lena from every decade. Many of the photographs have never been published until now!
One take-away from the book is how much of a fashion icon Lena Horne was. She was absolutely glamorous. It’s so unfortunate she isn’t remembered in the same way as Audrey Hepburn is for her impeccable style. The pages full of black & white and color photographs from photo shoots, paparazzi photographs, and her many performances are breathtaking.
I knew essentially nothing about Lena Horne prior to this book, aside from seeing her in a few musicals. It was very interesting to read about her climb to stardom, her relationships, and her civil rights activism. Many aspects are sad, such as other African American actors protesting her (you’ll have to read the book to find out why). But there are so many beautiful things about her story as well.
If you’re already a fan of Lena Horne, this book is a no-brainer! Add it to your cart now! If you’re like me, and you love all things classic Hollywood, this book is great to add to your collection. It reads like a good book, not a text book. The book is also going to be aesthetically pleasing on any coffee or side table.
